Brett Angell does not smoke yet has somehow ended up using recycled cigarette packages as the subject matter for his unique three-dimensional collages. These unusually small works are a reaction against the outrageously large scale of the world’s contemporary art made for the wealthy. Think of these as domestically scaled work for real people to live with in their real homes.
A continuous theme has been silver and bronze age comics from the 1960’s and 1970’s. The work’s Initial influence was the nostalgia of lazy childhood afternoons pouring over comics. They have ultimately been twisted into an adult version of those feelings with notes of love, humor, sadness, bitterness, outrage and irony.
While these works may be small they pack a punch both visually and conceptually. The collages draw the viewer into the little worlds happening within them. The cigarette package is given a renewed second life from trash to a shiny new gift. Perhaps a new way to look at the world around oneself.
